Trina Solar revitalises disused mining space with Vertex N 700W modules
Project involves placing PV modules in coal mine goafs, converting a brownfield site into a renewable energy facility
2023.10.17

Trina Solar’s 210mm Vertex ultra-high power modules, including the Vertex N 700W and the Vertex 670W, are being employed in a 2GW photovoltaic project on the site of a former coal mine in Ningxia, China. Once the station is connected to the grid, it is forecast to save about 960,000 tons of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 2.62 million tons a year.

This massive solar power plant is built on coal mine goafs (disused areas of mines where minerals have been partially or completely removed), representing a highly successful brownfield conversion project and contributing to China’s energy transition.

Additionally, the project has adopted solar power tailored to local conditions to make the most of land resources, including subsidence areas and barren hills and slopes. The development of new energy sources has been integrated with environmentally friendly mining management techniques.

These measures guarantee the local provision of clean electricity, and promote greener operating methods in the long term. This will speed up the transition of subsidence-prone regions to renewable energy usage, while making full use of brownfield sites no longer deemed fit for mining activity.

The Ningxia region receives copious sunshine and intense radiation, providing ideal conditions for developing solar energy. When planning the scheme, the project owner conducted a rigorous module selection process, considering the need for dependable, high-efficiency energy generation with minimal environmental impact. This led to Trina Solar’s “golden-size” modules with 210mm cell technology being selected.

Vertex N 700W modules, a leading technology in ground-mounted power stations, and Vertex p-type 670W modules jointly guarantee highly efficient, reliable power generation, a stable supply of green energy and low LCOE. The 210mm product technology platform has a proven track record among global customers, offering high durability and consistent performance in diverse settings including sinkholes, gullies and mountains.

This project represents the latest step in Trina Solar’s growth, drawing on innovation as a driving force. With the integrated n-type industrial chain, high-quality products and excellent service, the company will keep contributing to a net zero future.
