Addressing Module Reliability Issues and Safety Concerns for C&I Solar Projects

The solar industry sits at a pivotal juncture, with unprecedented growth in demand and technological advancements hitting the market at rapid speed. However, this fast-paced evolution has also led to increased challenges, particularly concerning PV module reliability and the safety of commercial and industrial (C&I) solar PV systems. As solar Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms navigate this complex landscape, it is crucial to prioritize quality assurance and control (QA/QC) to mitigate risks and ensure long-term success. Addressing these issues will not just be a necessity but an opportunity to lead.

Let’s look at how EPCs can counter the record number of PV module failures and unlock more options to focus on developing more rigorous C&I solar QA/QC processes.

Countering a Record Number of PV Module Failures

The latest insights from the 2024 PV Module Reliability Scorecard by Kiwa PV Evolution Labs (PVEL) paint a complex picture. While the number of "Top Performers" has reached new heights, a record number of manufacturers experienced failures during testing. Alarmingly, two-thirds of manufacturers faced at least one test failure, the highest ever. At the bill of materials (BOM) level, failures surged to 41%, a stark rise from previous years.

This uptick in failures arises as a byproduct of the solar industry's rapid technological advancements and dynamic nature. As manufacturers push the boundaries of innovation, the risk of defects and quality issues inevitably increases. These failures, often manifesting as junction box problems, power loss, or delamination, can undermine the performance and longevity of solar projects, leading to higher costs and diminished investor confidence.

Selecting reliable PV modules is pivotal to the success of any solar project. Trinasolar's Vertex N modules, lauded as "Top Performers" in the 2024 Reliability Scorecard, exemplify industry-leading reliability and performance. The modules excelled in all seven tests conducted by Kiwa PVEL, an extremely rare feat that underscores Vertex N’s superior power output, efficiency, and durability.

The Vertex N 720W series, in particular, combines advanced TOPCon technology with 210mm wafers, offering higher power output, increased bifaciality, and lower degradation. Its compatibility with solar trackers provides project flexibility, even in challenging terrains.

Unlocking More Resources to Focus on C&I Solar QA/QC

Safety and reliability are the bedrock of any successful C&I solar project. Yet, the 2024 SolarGrade PV Health Report from HelioVolta revealed a concerning trend: 72% of inspections identified issues requiring urgent remediation, up from 62% last year. Wiring and connector-related problems were particularly prevalent, found in 80% and 83% of inspections, respectively.

Out of the ~100,000 PV system health data points from hundreds of system inspections across the U.S. and Puerto Rico that constitute the report’s data set, 55% of all inspections were for new construction before the EPC hand-off occurred or a final punch list was delivered.

These findings highlight the critical need for EPCs to conduct more rigorous QA/QC processes. Without them, the potential for system failures, costly repairs, and safety hazards increases significantly. However, dedicating additional time and resources for more rigorous QA/QC processes can be difficult for small to mid-sized EPC firms, many already operating on slim margins and at total capacity.

That’s where the TrinaPro total solar solution can help. This one-stop-shop approach streamlines procurement while ensuring optimized component compatibility by bundling components for C&I solar projects and ensuring seamless integration and interconnection. With a dedicated service team handling project scoping and procurement, EPCs can focus resources on QA/QC, reducing long-term system risks and enhancing project value.
